Charge Basis
Overview
Charge Basis defines how quantity is calculated and how charges are applied to a charge item. The selected Charge Basis determines whether Qty is derived from shipment data, entered manually, or adjusted by a configured minimum.
Charge Basis | Type | Logic |
|---|---|---|
Per Shipment | Flat | Qty is always 1 |
Per Container | Equipment | Qty follows total containers |
Per KG | Weight / Measure | Qty follows total weight |
Per CBM | Weight / Measure | Qty follows total measurement (with optional rounding) |
Per Day | Time | User enters Qty manually |
How Charge Basis works in practice
Charge Basis entries are defined in Master Data and then assigned to individual charge items in the Job Estimation tab of a shipment. The selected basis determines how the system calculates the quantity for that charge line — by counting containers, by summing cargo weight, by time, or another unit. Changing the basis on a charge line recalculates Qty and Amount automatically.
Video walkthrough
The walkthrough below demonstrates how selecting different Charge Basis options on the same charge line changes how quantity is determined.
Charge-Basis.mp4
Selecting Container 20 — an equipment-based basis — sets quantity from the number of matching containers. In the recorded example on shipment SI-2604-010, Qty becomes 1 for its single 20-foot container. The dropdown entries are tenant-specific.
Switching the same charge line to per KG — a weight-based basis — changes the quantity rule entirely. Qty now derives from the shipment's total cargo weight rather than a container count. After selecting per KG, Qty changes to 0 and the Amount recalculates accordingly. This demonstrates that each Charge Basis type pulls from a different data source on the shipment — equipment counts, cargo weight, or another unit — and the system recalculates automatically when the basis changes.
Note: The available Charge Basis options are configured per tenant under Master Data. Your dropdown may show different entries depending on what has been set up for your organisation.
Key takeaways
Charge Basis = the quantity rule for a charge item. It tells the system how to calculate Qty automatically.
Equipment-based bases like Container 20 or Container 40 count the matching containers on the shipment.
Weight-based bases like per KG or Per Chargeable Weight derive Qty from the shipment's total cargo weight.
Changing the Charge Basis on a line automatically recalculates the quantity and amount — no manual re-entry needed.
Accessing Charge Basis
Navigate to Rate Management in the left sidebar.

Select Charge Basis.

Charge Basis List
The Charge Basis List shows all available Charge Basis configurations. Use the search bar at the top to find a specific entry. You can search for a Charge Basis by typing in the search bar at the top of the list.

To understand the usage of each Charge Basis type, click Understanding Types of Charge Basis. A pop-up will appear explaining the function and purpose of each type.

Add a Charge Basis
Click New Charge Basis.

In the side drawer that appears, enter the Charge Basis Name.

Select the Charge Basis Type from the dropdown. Each option includes a description of its purpose and usage.

Fill in any additional configuration fields that appear based on the selected type.

For the Per CBM type, you can enable CBM Round Up to apply rounding. When selected, a Rounding Precision field appears with options to round to 0.5 or 1.0.
Click Save.
Chargeable weight, rounding and minimums
For applicable weight/measure configurations, review Dim Factor, Chargeable Weight Rule, and Default Minimum Quantity:
Whichever greater compares gross and volumetric quantities using the configured conversion factor rather than comparing unlike raw units.
Always use volumetric uses the volumetric quantity. CBM Round Up applies when enabled, using the configured precision.
Default Minimum Quantity sets a floor for the chargeable quantity. If an entered quantity is below the configured minimum, the system adjusts it and shows a notification.
Minimum charge is an amount floor. When quantity × unit price is below that floor, the total reflects the minimum charge while the unit price remains unchanged.
Review the resulting quantity and total on quotation and Job Estimation lines. A minimum quantity and a minimum amount are different controls, so the final amount may not equal the originally entered quantity multiplied by the displayed unit price.
Edit a Charge Basis
From the Charge Basis List, click the ⋯ (three-dot) action button next to the entry.

Charge Basis Type Configurations
Flat
A fixed charge applied once per document or transaction. This type is not affected by quantity, weight, volume, or equipment usage. Qty is typically always set to 1.

Weight / Measure
Includes Per KG, Per CBM, and CBM W/M types. Commonly used for freight or cargo-based charges where pricing depends on shipment size or weight.

Equipment
Includes Per Container, Per Truck, and Per Barge types. Qty is driven by the number of equipment units used.

Block
Charge calculated per block of specific units. The system rounds up the quantity using ceiling logic when the value exceeds the defined block size. Commonly used when pricing is charged in grouped quantity increments.
Example: 23 CBM ÷ 10 CBM/block = 3 blocks (rounded up)

Count
Charge calculated based on total unit count or occurrence quantity. Qty is determined from the total number of items, cargo units, commodities, transactions, or activities.

Time
Charge calculated based on usage duration (per hour, day, or shift of service or equipment usage). Commonly used for operational services or equipment usage with time-based pricing.
